Rising into the misty highlands of central Kenya, Aberdare National Park is a world of ancient forests, bamboo groves, moorlands and cascading waterfalls. Its cool, lush landscapes offer a striking contrast to Kenya’s open savannahs, with wildlife including elephant, buffalo, leopard, black rhino and the elusive bongo. The park is also renowned for its beautiful mountain scenery, forest trails and atmospheric waterholes where wildlife gathers, often surrounded by swirling mountain mist.
Samburu National Reserve is a dramatic landscape of dry savannah, in Kenya’s rugged northern frontier. The place is surrounded by rocky hills and within it flows the life-giving Ewaso Ng’iro River. It is famous for its distinctive wildlife, including the Samburu Special Five—Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich—alongside elephant, lion, leopard and wild dog.
Framed by the dramatic escarpments of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru National Park combines a beautiful alkaline lake with woodland, grassland and rocky viewpoints. Once celebrated for vast gatherings of flamingos, the park remains an important sanctuary for black and white rhinoceros, as well as Rothschild’s giraffe, buffalo, lion and leopard. Its compact size and exceptional concentration of wildlife make Nakuru an ideal safari destination.

Aberdare National Park is forever linked with one of the most remarkable moments in royal history. On 5 February 1952, the 25-year-old Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh spent the night at Aberdare. That night, her father, King George VI, died in England, making Elizabeth Queen. She had arrived in Kenya as a princess; by the time she left Aberdare, she was Queen Elizabeth II
The 1994 animated film “The Lion King “ was created in Disney studios, but the filmmakers travelled to Kenya, including Hell’s Gate National Park, to study and photograph African landscapes and wildlife. Hell’s Gate became one of the strongest inspirations for the film’s landscapes.
The 2019 photorealistic remake was also created digitally rather than filmed on location. The Masai Mara influenced the look of the Pride Lands, while the Ndoto Mountains and Chyulu Hills influenced Pride Rock. Mount Kenya and Aberdare helped inspire the Cloud Forest.
The opening sunrise shot used real African footage, while almost the entire rest of the environment was digitally created.
The 1966 classic Born Free, starring Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, was filmed primarily in Kenya, with several locations across the country. The principal locations included Meru National Park, Shaba National Reserve, Naro Moru and Maralal, with some filming also taking place in Malindi.
Most importantly for the story of Elsa the lioness, Meru National Park is closely associated with the real-life Adamsons and Elsa. The film used the dramatic landscapes of the region to portray the wilderness into which Elsa was eventually released. Shaba National Reserve, now part of the greater Samburu ecosystem, was also one of the filming locations.
itinerary
On arrival at the Nairobi airport, you will be met by our airport representative and drive to Aberdare Country club and check in for some rest and take lunch. You will then have to carry a small overnighter bag and proceed to the “The Ark”, Aberdare in their vehicle. The Ark is famous for wildlife viewing from the lodge itself. The waterhole is where the animals come for Salt lick and the in house staff gives updates by ringing the bell based on wildlife coming to the salt-lick.
Today morning check out after having breakfast and drive to Samburu, situated alongside the Ewaso Nyiro River, there is plenty to attract wildlife from the surrounding savannah plains. The reserve is rich in wildlife with an abundance of rare northern specialist species such as the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, Reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and the Beisa oryx (also referred to as Samburu Special Five). The reserve is also home to elephants and large predators such as the lion, leopard and cheetah. ‘Kamunyak’, the miracle lioness that adopted the baby oryx was a resident in the reserve.
Enjoy a full day game drive at Samburu with packed breakfast and packed lunch.
Early morning check out with breakfast and drive to Lake Elementaita. Enjoy lunch enroute at local restaurant and check in at resort followed by rest of the day at leisure.
Today we set out for a full day safari at Lake Nakuru national park, with packed breakfast & lunch. The highlight will be to witness white rhino and black rhino, one of the Big 5 of Africa. We also look out for big cats and wildlife around the lake. Return to the lodge by sunset.
After Breakfast, check out and drive to Naivasha & take a one hour boat ride among the hippos. You then go to visit Hell’s Gate National Park with a picnic lunch.Drop off at Nairobi hotel.
Today you will visit the Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick Trust along with the Museum and Karen Blixen. All depends on the timing of your International flight and time management. Finally you will be dropped off at the Airport.
